discussing the release of Disinformation:"The book of lies"

THE BOOK OF LIES IS OUT!

http://www.amazon.com/Book-Lies-Disinformation-Magick-Occult/dp/097139427X/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1281257229&sr=1-3

A nice big fat large format anthology centered around the concept of being a guide to the occult in the 21st century edited by our friend RICHARD METZGER of Disinformation has just been published. It contains dozens of essays and speculative texts by or concerned with such luminaries as William S, Burroughs; Brion Gysin; Timothy Leary; Grant Morrison; Hakim Bey; Daniel Pinchbeck; Terence McKenna; Robert Anton Wilson; Joe Coleman and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. In fact there are THREE essays by G.B.P-O in the book. A version of "Thee Splinter Test", "Virtual Mirrors In Solid Time", and an entirely new 16 page text on Burroughs and Gysin as conscious practising shaman/magickians called "MAGICK SQUARES AND FUTURE BEATS".

The book is heavily illustrated all the way through, a great many photographs are published for the very first time through the generosity of Thee Last Museum project and our personal archives. We feel this is the most useful manual around for getting a grounding in contemporary occultural strategies and speculations. Having said that, there is a very glaring lack of women authors and artists. Patriarchy has a habit of being self-referential, self-reverential and self perpetuating. It's a pity. There are women in Astory who have contributed to our understanding of the other dimensions and possibilities of reality. Madame Blavatsky for example. In recent years there has been un upsurge of post-psychedlic feminine exploration of magick both in more neo-native american, ethno-botanical ( Kat McKenna for eg.), intuitive synthetic magick ritual practised by people like the Women's Red Circle of Ratio 3 T.O.P.Y. before it was terminated in 1991. Of course it takes longer to expose and bring to light the work of women pioneers in any field. Magick in particular often saw women (Aleister Crowley and Jack Parsons could fall into this category) as a little too literally "VESSELS". Almost an extra magickal tool to use in occult work, rather than work WITH. So the ommission of groundbreaking new research focussed on the female lineages is a weakness. There's also a preponderance of Western Ritual magick practice. We feel there could have been some trimming of nazi occultism in favour of including a text on YORUBA ORISHA worship traditions, which is the fastest growing religion in the United States at present due to its prevelance in the Latino community. The occult is an huge area of humanE endeavor so no one envies Richard's task in deciding on what to include. Suffice it to say that we don't get any Tibettan "Bon Po" sorcery, or HOPI and other Native American secret traditions, no New Guinea sorcery, no Aboriginal mysteries. The Book Of Lies is extremely Euro-centric.

Nevertheless, it is packed full of thinking and wondering and some good precis of key Western figures and events. We are happy to discover that the essay on "The Magickal Processes and Methods of William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin" has been singled out for very positive praise several times as a new perspective upon their body of work and previously undocumented motivation for many collaborations.

Richard...how about a SISTER volume on The Astory of Women and the Occult, and maybe, magickal systems and sorceries from around the world?
